The Hierophantic Task
Hammer on the Nail
by Sr. Continuity

We all know O.T.O. is hierarchical in an administrative sense. A tightly ordered hierarchy can be useful, and I hope we will all figure out ways to benefit from it's framework. (I personally adore hierarchical frameworks... I like to climb as high as I can then hang by my knees and swing).

What this means to you as a member of O.T.O., in a practical and immediate sense, is this: you can do anything you want, whim, wish, or will in your own name. You are a member of O.T.O. and if you wish that fact to be known in conjunction with your actions then you, the individual, will no doubt make it so.

However, you do not represent O.T.O. officially (except maybe in the eyes of some—something to consider) unless you have been given leave by the Caliph Hymenaeus Beta, to do so. And you do not represent Scarlet Woman Camp of O.T.O. unless you have been given leave by me, the Camp Master, to do so.

Here is the thing; this is the only authoritarian statement I really have to make. There is no High Priest or Priestess here... no set curriculum (although of course there is a really great suggested one)... and no one to tell you when it is time to advance in the Order, or give you permission to do so.

No higher authority will test you in your studies, point by point as you proceed... although if you proceed through the degrees without benefit of study and practice, you will eventually reach the formidable brick wall known as the IV° written test... but that is another story for another rainy night. This path does not involve any compulsory guided mentoring. As far as the Order is concerned, your magickal study, methods, and goals are your business.

Our common business is promulgating the Law of Thelema. All of this is not to say that you can't learn a lot through or by your association with the Order. The O.T.O. has some pretty well travelled members that know a thing or two about a thing or two.

Perhaps you'll meet some of them...maybe you'll even seek and find some kind of teacher/pupil relationship too, but it will be because it is your will, and for no other reason.

All love,
Soror Continuity
